In late August, Johnson took his four children to his father Stanley’s holiday villa on Greece’s Pelion peninsula. Marina is understood not to have been with them. It so happened that Carrie was in Greece at the same time, though she and Johnson are not known to have met. Then, on 7 September, The Sun broke the news of his marital problems. ‘Bonking Boris Booted Out By Wife’ roared the front-page story. His daughter Lara was quoted in the article. ‘Fashion journalist Lara, 25, is understood to have been overheard exploding with rage at her philandering dad,’ the paper reported. ‘She is said to have told pals at a party he “is a selfish bastard”. And she insisted to one friend: “Mum is finished with him. She will never take him back now.”’ Carrie’s name did not feature in the copy, which was written by the then political editor of The Sun, Tom Newton Dunn, though it was noted that ‘rumours had circulated in Westminster that Boris had started to give his police protection officers the slip for illicit liaisons while he was Foreign Secretary’. The next day, Johnson went with his son Milo to the Oval to watch England’s final Test against India. Sitting on his own at one point, he was looking down at his phone when the television cameras spotted him in the crowd. While 21 per cent of voters said they would be more likely to vote for the Tories with Johnson in charge, 30 per cent said they would be less likely.

On 9 September, a second article by Johnson which used what might be described as goading language was published, this time in the Mail on Sunday. In it, he attacked Theresa May’s Brexit plan, saying she had ‘wrapped a suicide vest’ around the British constitution and ‘handed the detonator’ to Brussels. His detractors in the Tory Party accused him of using this metaphor to try to deflect attention away from his personal life. By then, he and Marina had released a joint statement confirming that they had separated ‘some time ago’ and were in the process of getting a divorce. But whatever he had written that day was overshadowed by further coverage of his private life in the Sun on Sunday, which named Carrie as the new woman in his life. ‘The former Foreign Secretary has been texting her at all hours and once sent his car to pick her up at a wedding,’ the paper revealed. ‘His wife is understood to have found a string of text messages between the pair.’ One source told the paper that the affair had been going on for several months. ‘It’s fair
